With all the new gadgets on the market, you may feel a little behind the times with your two or three year old device.
The pressure may get to you and decide to get a new device, or look for advice on the topic. There are many advantages to getting a new device like:
- Getting the latest sensors on a phone
- getting the latest software
- the latest chipset
- and a nicer looking phone
However you may not be able to afford the latest devices every year consecutively or it may be a complete waste of money. Unless you do reviews on smartphones, getting a new smartphone every year may be too much.
If you are considering to upgrede your phone what should you consider?

- If your current phone is still supported by the manufacturer
- If your device is still supported and has the latest security updates, chances are it is still working properly and you don’t need a replacement right away.
- On the contrary, having a device with a security patch from last year may be risky since it does not have the latest security and may be vulnerable to attacks.
- how long it will be supported
- If your device will be supported for two or more years, I don’t see the need to upgrade unless you need a phone with a better or new sensor that is not available on your current device.
- If it’s its final year of support you may need to start looking for a replacement, but maybe not right away.
- physical condition
- You may need to replace a device in poor condition, or repair it according to your preference.
A two year old flagship will serve you well since its well supported. The midrange smartphones will seem slower but they too will get the work done, the budget smartphones on the other hand will struggle if you are a heavy phone user since they are made for simple tasks like calling, messaging, web browsing and watching videos. The latter may need to be upgraded!
